シンシア・コールマン（Cynthia Coleman)さんは、当校のLL.M.プログラムのアソシエイトディレクターとして、留学生の世話を一手に引き受けていらっしゃいます。われわれの体験記や日記にしばしば出てくる「シンシア」「Sさん」というのは、この方のことです。豊富な経験・迅速な対応・親身になってのアドバイスなど、留学生に関することについてシンシアさんの右に出る人は、全米のロースクールでもまずいないといっても過言ではないでしょう。

以下、シンシアさんからの皆さんに対するメッセージです。

I hope that you will contact me to learn more about the many opportunities here at Vanderbilt Law School. I will be glad to provide you with all the information you need to assure that you have the best experience possible during your time in the U.S. I will assist you with everything from finding a beautiful apartment, a preschool for your children, directions to the Japanese grocery store, to advising you about the process for applying to take the New York Bar exam (which many of the students from Japan take and pass).

Each year I watch as the students from Japan arrive with no idea of what to expect here in Nashville. It is rewarding to see that what they find here exceeds their expectations. Later, when they return to their careers in Japan, I'm glad to hear that what they learn here contributes greatly to their continued success in Japan.

In addition, because of the small LL.M. program size here, LLM students make lifelong friends with students from all over the world.

　アワー教授は、バンダービルト大学のシンクタンク、公共政策研究所｣（VIPPS） に所属する研究機関として開設された日米研究協力センター（Center for U.S.-Japan Studies and Cooperation）の所長をされていらっしゃいます。センターの目的は、日米関係の強化に資する研究を行うとともに、今後の両国の関係を担う人材を育成する交流や活動の場を提供し、共通の国益を育むことにあります。 1988 年以来、毎年センターが受け入れてきた日本政府などからの研究員は80名以上に上ります。アワー教授が中心となって、毎月第三火曜日に日本人および日本に興味を持つ方々の集まるパーティーや、年末のクリスマスパーティーなどが開催されています。アワー教授や、教授のアシスタントのMichikoさんには、ロースクールの日本人も公私に亘って大変にお世話になっています。以下、アワー教授より、日本の受験生に向けてのお言葉をいただきました。

In 1999 I was asked by then Vanderbilt Law School Dean Kent Syverud if I thought many Japanese individuals working in law firms, government ministries, and private companies might be interested in a one-year master's program in law (LLM). I said I thought they would. I have since met Japanese Vanderbilt LLM students from law firms, government, private companies, and just private individuals. They have all seemed pleased by the special attention they receive from faculty at the Vanderbilt Law School, whether they are in the JD program or the LLM program. One recent Japanese LLM took a second LLM course at a prestigious university after his LLM program at Vanderbilt.　He wrote to me later saying that Vanderbilt's program was clearly superior. Vanderbilt has recently added a non thesis option to its LLM program providing for more flexibility and individual choice.
